Fertilization (Defined)
Definition of Fertilization

Fertilization: Fertilization is the process of combining the male gamete, or "sperm," with the female gamete, or "ovum." The product of this combination is a cell called a zygote. (From http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=3413.)

Fertilization is the beginning of a unique new human person. However, this terminology can be confusing in some instances. For a detailed treatment of this issue, see "A Personhood Primer" from American Life League.

"After fertilization has taken place a new human being has come into being. [It] is no longer a matter of taste or opinion...it is plain experimental evidence. Each individual has a very neat beginning, at conception."

— World-renowned geneticist Jerome Lejeune
